Stepping into new contexts can bring up a lot of different thoughts and feelings about how our lives have gone in the past and about our yearnings for the future. As such, stepping into newness can take a kind of bravery of the soul. Rainer Maria Rilke confesses, "It is a tremendous act of violence to begin anything. I simply skip what should be the beginning." And yet, Oprah Winfrey observes, "If you want to accomplish the goals of your life, you have to begin with the spirit." No matter how gentle the wider context is for each first step we take, the actual moment of starting is in a way a paroxysm of incarnate creative conception. As we begin a new year together, what are you doing to witness, honor, and celebrate the bravery it takes for you and others just to begin again?
