Compersion is arguably a kind of empathy, a positive empathy. At the same time, there are perhaps at least three distinct levels of empathy that we can experience, rational, emotional, and behavioral. So we can start to understand that there are also perhaps at least three distinct and meaningful levels of compersion that we can experience. What helps you have rational compersion? [image description: A heart stretches backward, one foot forward and one foot back, while standing on a yoga mat. Across from the stretching heart stands another with one hand on its head. This second heart says, "I imaging stretching feels great after your run. I love this." Text reads: "rational compersion" above and below, "Perspective taking to mentally understand the joy another is experiencing and to contemplate this joy within one's sense of self."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
