Perhaps we can feel compersive even before we have witnessed another actually having a good experience or feeling. We might call this a positive projection, a positive mental state that we feel in anticipation of another's joy. What's a positive projection you have had about someone in the past month? [image description: Two smiling hearts are standing facing each other. The heart on the left has a thought bubble that contains the heart on the right smiling and with arms thrown out. The heart on the left is pointing at its own thought bubble and simultaneously pointing at the heart on the right. The heart on the right is pointing at itself with one hand and has the other hand thrown up and out. Text reads: "positive projection" and below that, "Imagining good things happening for another."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2021. On this day 2020. On this day 2019. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
