The Chinese concept of double happiness, triple happiness, and so forth is considered especially auspicious as 88 happiness. The number eight is a lucky number, two eights is therefore doubly lucky, and 88 appears similar in form to the double happiness Chinese character (囍). 88 happiness is therefore used frequently to name restaurants, casinos, apartments for rent, beauty salons, entertainment companies, and musical songs and projects — and even to price goods for sale! In this way, 88 happiness may have a wider community reach than double or triple happiness, and so perhaps generally speaks more so to a community-level wish for happiness. Describe the last time your community or communities experienced a collective happiness. How did it make you feel? [image description: Eight smiling hearts float in space with many more hearts all around. Text reads: "88 囍" and below that, "eighty-eight happiness," and at the bottom, "Community happiness."] #MindfulHearts RETROSPECTIVE ~ 4/5 ~ on this day 2021 2020 2018 Celebrating four years of daily cartoons!! In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
