The expression "to be a Pollyanna" comes from a children's novel about a girl who is it seems overly optimistic about everything. She seems cursed with an ability to look at the bright side of everything through something she calls The Glad Game. While in the book, Pollyanna and her community ultimately benefit from her positivity, critics have noted the use of this story as a tool of oppression to avoid changing social services and broken institutions by blaming individuals for not being cheery enough. Yet, gratitude can be a powerful resource in experiencing and appreciating the joy that does exist in and around us. How do use gratitude to experience compersion in ways that work for you? [image description: Two heart face each other talking. The heart on the left with a single, wild braid of hair says, "I didn't pass my exam," and, "Though three new people signed up as clients." The heart on the right with a single, well-place braid of hair pinned along its crown replies, "You're doing great building your practice." Text reads: "The Glad Game" and below that, "Celebrating whatever joy there does exist."] #MindfulHearts RETROSPECTIVE ~ 4/21 ~ on this day 2021 2020 2019 2018 ~ celebrating four years of daily cartoons ~

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
