But the relationship of these emotions can get cloudy. It may not always be clear that our pride in others' accomplishments starts in part with understanding that our loved ones are simultaneously proud of themselves. Our pride is shared. We feel what more accurately could be called "vicarious pride and joy."
Even when our loved ones are not in touch with their own feeling of pride — yet perhaps on some level yearn to be proud of themselves — we can still feel vicarious pride that resonates around the possibility of pride. And perhaps by being explicit with our language and changing the English expression to "vicarious pride and joy," we may be able to help signal to our loved ones that the pride is theirs. We may even help them remember to feel more of their pride for themselves.
