Protest can be an important part of social change movements, and social justice campaigns and protests can change the course of elections. In 2020, Charles Booker's strong primary race in Kentucky against Amy McGrath for a seat in the U.S. Senate, pivoted in part on Booker supporting Breonna Taylor's family in seeking justice for Breonna's killing by Louisville police. While McGrath won the primary, Booker has promised that he will continue to hold McGrath accountable for the wellbeing of Black communities. The day after the Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron stood behind a grand jury decision not to prosecute the three police officers involved in killing Breonna Taylor, Mitch McConnell gave a speech on the Senate floor declaring Cameron's investigation, "exactly the kind of thorough, impartial investigation that justice demands," while describing the protests as, "more of the lawlessness, riots, and violence that has plagued American cities too often this year." Since the Kentucky primary in the summer of 2020, McGrath and Booker have teamed up to remove Mitch McConnell from the Senate, and Breonna Taylor's name and life are a rallying cry for what matters this November. What can you do today to learn more about Senate elections in your state? What can you do now to take action for Black lives? MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2019. On this day 2018. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
