After all the wrongheaded things we've done in human history, we might wonder why we're still shocked to learn of the same old mistakes and misguided takes on life occurring and reoccurring, again and again. In 2015, a small town in southern Indiana recorded more than two dozen cases of new HIV infections, an outbreak that was linked to use of a prescription opioid. Opana, created by Endo Pharmaceuticals, was marketed by the company as hard to abuse, a claim later found to be false. In 2017, the FDA called for Opana to be pulled from the prescription drug market. What have you been surprised to learn about history that is both past and present?
