In March 2022, glimmers broke mainstream news in the United States in a USA Today article by Sara M. Moniuszko. Moniouszko explained: "Trigger has become a commonplace term in our cultural lexicon, but few people know about the opposite of triggers: glimmers. Coined by Deb Dana, a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in complex trauma, in her 2018 book The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy, glimmers refers to small moments when our biology is in a place of connection or regulation, which cues our nervous system to feel safe and calm." While we may benefit from being able to witness with compassion our negative triggers, we may also benefit from identifying and savoring our positive glimmers. What are some common glimmers in your life? [image description: A smiling heart gently holds its hand to its cheek as it looks at large bubble letters that read: "Know your triggers. Embrace your GLIMMERS." Around the words are many smaller hearts, starbursts, and polka dots.] #MindfulHearts RETROSPECTIVE ~ 11/13 ~ on this day 2022 2021 2020 2019 2018 ~ celebrating five years of daily cartoons ~

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
