Suicidality is not a rare disease that happens to a select unlucky or bad few. In fact, suicidality is very much the opposite. Suicidal thoughts are nearly ubiquitous and suicide death is a leading cause of death globally for people ages 15 to 44. Yet many people remain unaware that they are very much not alone with experiences of suicidality. Yet it may be difficult to know how to connect with folks who have been impacted by suicide. We may fear saying the wrong thing. And we may in fact say things that are clunky and feel bad to others. But talking about suicide is still an important act in deshaming and protecting against suicide. What can you do today to raise more awareness about suicide? ~ Suicide LifeLine dial or text 988 or dial 1.800.273.8255 [image description: Four hearts in a row with somber, dour, or quizzical facial expressions look out at the viewer. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
