In the face of stigma, it can be very difficult to talk openly about suicide with friends, family, and wider community. At the same time, it is neither necessary nor particularly helpful to push past people's comfort levels and demand that others talk about suicide. Yet, we can do more ourselves to bring up the topic. We can work to be in different ways with the voice inside us that says "shouldn't," a voice that operates to shame, control, and harm us. We can take a chance with people close to us, trusting that the more we speak and learn about suicide, the less power it may have over our collective realities. Make a point this week of talking about suicide with someone, or with several people. ~ Suicide LifeLine dial or text 988 or dial 1.800.273.8255 [image description: A heart with a quizzical facial expression looks up at text that reads, "Not talking openly about suicide can increase suicidality."] #MindfulHearts RETROSPECTIVE ~ 6/7 ~ on this day 2021 2020 2019 2018 ~ celebrating four years of daily cartoons ~

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
